“Behind every successful woman stands a resentful man.” So says the book’s tagline and on this occasion it definitely is the case.
Set at the time of a Hull parliamentary by-election caused by the resignation of a MP mired in scandal, it is apt for this exact moment and undoubtedly always will be.
Our main protagonists are a husband (Rick) and wife (Kirsty), both pretty successful in life, he as a journalist and her as a head teacher. Their relationship takes an unplanned turn as Kirsty decides to take a crack at becoming Labour’s candidate to stand to become an MP.
Will Kirsty win the nomination to stand for Labour? How would Rick respond to being outshone by the woman he professes to love? Will their marriage survive if Kirsty does indeed become an MP?
These are the main questions posed in the book. Finding out the answers is intriguing with plenty of unexpected twists along the way.
I really enjoyed the story even if it was not easy to warm to the main characters, particularly Rick’s misogynist boss. Wendy’s writing style let’s you into the private thoughts of Rick & Kirsty, and leaves you to decipher what is selfless and what is selfish.
Reading this fast-paced book gives you an insight into the workings of party politics and is highly recommended.
